Memphis (TN) — The Charlotte Independence extended their winning streak to three games with a 2-1 victory over Memphis 901 FC on Saturday night. Independence forward Niki Jackson was in on both scores, including the game-winning header in the 77th minute.
Throughout a quiet first half, the Independence mainly dominated the quality chances, finally breaking through in the 39th minute. Independence defender Clay Dimick crossed in a ball, which Jackson acrobatically kicked forcing a save from Memphis goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell. The rebound fell directly to Jorge Herrera who netted his 72nd career USL Championship regular-season goal.
For a second consecutive game, the Independence only conceded a goal outside of the run of play via a penalty kick. In the 73rd minute, Memphis forward Brandon Allen stepped to the spot and scored the penalty, but follow an altercation, was immediately sent off on a straight red card.
In a dramatic change of the game, Memphis was reduced to 10-men, and then Independence midfielder Enzo Martinez picked out Niki Jackson for the go-ahead score. Collecting all three points, the Independence eliminated Memphis for playoff contention and leapfrogged them in the Eastern Conference Standings.
