Howard won 2022 USL W League Save of The Year
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 10, 2023) – The Charlotte Independence USL W League team today announced the addition of Wake Forest University goalkeeper, Madison Howard, for the 2023 season, pending league and federation approval. Howard is a former member of the NC Fusion’s USL W League program and won the award for 2022 USL W League “Save of The Year”.
“I’m really looking forward to playing on the same team as a lot of the girls I grew up playing against, and continue to play against now that I am in college,” Howard said. “Charlotte had a great inaugural season last year, and I’m super excited to build on that and compete at the highest level this summer. I can’t wait to build on already existing relationships and form new ones while bringing home lots of wins to Charlotte.”
During her time with NC Fusion, Howard was named All-Conference and earned a CSP selection. She was also awarded “Save of The Week” three times.
As a junior at Wake Forest University, Howard has totaled 10 games played. She allowed zero goals her junior season. Howard started five games as a freshman, including combined shutouts against Duke and Miami. She recorded a season-high fours saves against North Carolina.
At Greensboro Day School in Greensboro, North Carolina, Howard played three years of varsity soccer. She was recognized as a two-time MVP, a two-time All-Region selection, and two-time All State selection. Howard was also the Conference Player of the year her junior year when her team became back-to-back conference champions in 2018 and 2019.
“I remember watching Maddie play last year and was overly impressed with her positive attitude, bubbly demeanor,” explained Charlotte Independence USL W League Head Coach, Robyn Horner. “She has the ability to lead, while also being able to come up with the big time save. We are very excited to be able to add her to our group this summer!”
