HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (June 10, 2023) – The Charlotte Independence drew 1-1 with the visiting Wake FC on Saturday evening at the Community School of Davidson’s Spartan Athletic Complex. Next, the Independence women are on the road for three-straight games starting this Tuesday, June 13 at NC Fusion.
The Charlotte Independence women appeared to have the advantage for a majority of the half. Their first chance came in the 5th minute. #18 Sydney Smith served a long ball over the top to #17 Olivia Simon who did well to remain on sides. She dribbled towards goal and took the shot but it was saved by the Wake FC goalkeeper. The rebound was headed again by Simon, but again denied. She found the ball again and dropped it back to #8 Breckyn Monteith who took a shot towards net. The keeper got a glove on it and knocked it out of play.
Wake FC found their first look at goal in the 16th minute. It was a shot from distance that was easily collected by Independence goalkeeper #41 Sejal Johnson.
The Independence quickly countered again, this time lead by #11 Corinne Gregory. She dished a pass out wide to Simon who played a cross into the box. The Wake FC goalkeeper came out to get a hand on it, but she was unable to gain control. #21 Carolina Peters took the shot off the rebound, but she was denied by the Wake FC defense.
The visitors continued to venture forward and found their way through the Independence back line in the 19th minute. It was Asha Means who snuck into the box and took the first time shot, sliding it past Johnson putting Wake FC up by one.
With minutes to play in the half the Independence earned a corner kick. Peters sent the service towards the back post. #15 Jenna Butler got up for the header, but sent it just high over the crossbar.

Play was more evenly matched from both North Carolina clubs in the second half, the Independence coming away with more looks at goal as they looked to come back from a one goal deficit.
First, in the 68th minute, #12 Ayden Yates found herself in front of net. She attempted to chip the goalie but was blocked.
Just before the final whistle, Wake FC committed a hand ball inside their own box resulting in a Charlotte Independence penalty kick. #14 Kennedy Jones stepped up to take it. She buried it into the lower right corner of the net tying the match at one goal a piece.
Wake FC pressed in the Independence back line in the final minutes, but were unable to find success.
